Bergen, Norway

Bergen is Norway's second largest city after Oslo, with a population of nearly 400,000 people.  It is known as the Gateway to the Fjords and is the first port of call for the cruise aboard Ruby Princess. Here is a good overview on the city of Bergen Norway.

The most popular spots to visit in Bergen are Bryggen (wharf area), the Fjellskal (fish market) and Mount Floien.  Princess provided a complimentary shuttle from the cruise pier into town.

On the map below, the cruise ship docks in the lower right corner of the image and Bryggen is in the center of the map.

The shuttle bus dropped cruise passengers off at the central park which had nice views of the fountain.  The day was nice and sunny with a temperature of about 18C.

From there it was a very short 5 minute walk through the center of town, where the tourist information office was located.   Because all of the main attractions were within walking distance, misterpiggy did not take any of the cruise ship shore excursions.

One could find the Fjellskal fish market a few more steps away.  Here's more pictures from the fish market.

The old medival wharf is called the Bryggen and is a very popular tourist spot.

And a visit to Bergen would not be complete unless you took a ride up the funicular to the top of  Mount Floien.

Here are some more pictures from  Bergen.

Here's a video of Bergen.

The only thing missed on this Bergen day trip was a visit to a traditional Stave church with it's unique architecture.  There wasn't enough time in misterpiggy's schedule to visit one in nearby Fantoft.

Next port of call:  Flam, Norway.
